Ok, I get why people are getting increasingly angry about the Cordoba
Initiative trying to build a Mosque (also there will be a swimming pool, lecture hall,
and gym) near (2 1/2 blocks) Ground Zero and I get why people are angry. However,
please, please get all of the facts about the group, place, contents and
activities before you yell and scream about it. It is a privately owned
building, it is two and a half blocks away, it can't be seen from
Ground Zero, it is already being used for prayer service and has been
since '09, it has the support of local political and religious leaders
of various religions and there is no evidence of any funding from
terrorist groups or Iran, NONE AT ALL. So far there has only been
speculation, not proof.
As far as I can tell this has been a purposeful and direct attempt by groups that harbor anti-Islamic feelings to mislead and misinform people about this project. It has also been picked up by various political figures as a fresh hot button issue to use against their opponents in the upcoming election. This is one of the few times when I have been honestly disappointed about the shear viciousness of America and the willingness to lash out without checking the facts first. I guess I just don't understand why we think that it is OK to attack which ever minority group happens to be the easiest target. Damn. Just feeling seriously frustrated at my nation right now.
We are suppose to be a free nation that doesn't throw away our rights every time it suits us or we get angry, but that's now how we work. It hasn't been for a long time. As far as I can tell there isn't any reason that suggests that the government should step in and stop this from happening, but if people have all the facts and are still angry fine. I can understand that. I just can't understand hatred for the sake of hatred, or hatred built off lies and ignorance. I just can't. We have access to so many resources now, why do we still choose to just listen to one source and then start screaming bloody murder? Why?
I need a beer.
